Debt is an investment in which an investor lends money to a company, government, or other entity in return for interest and return of principal. Unlike equity which represents ownership, debt investments represent a creditor relationship.
Mutual funds are professionally managed investment vehicles that pool money from multiple investors in order to purchase a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other securities. Mutual funds expose investors to a broad range of investments without having to select and manage each security individually.
Exchange traded funds are investment vehicles that pool money from multiple investors to hold a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other securities. A major characteristic is that they trade on an exchange throughout the trading day. ETFs offer diversification, flexibility, and usually lower expense ratios than actively managed investments.
Unit investment trusts are investment vehicles that pool money from multiple investors to purchase a diversified portfolio. A major characteristic of UITs is that they are designed with a fixed portfolio that will remain unchanged throughout the life of the trust. UITs have a defined termination date which the trust dissolves and proceeds are returned to investors.
Alternative investments are assets outside of traditional stocks and bonds. Examples of alternative opportunities include real estate investment trusts, private equity, commodities, and other strategies. Often times alternative investments involve different risks, fees, liquidity, or other complexities, but ultimately add greater diversification according to investors goals and suitability.
